There are many Latin American film festivals in Luxembourg, but this one is
really special for me: The Biarritz Latin America Festival
The Festival Biarritz Amérique Latine ciné- mas & cultures is, , one of the reference events for Latin cinema in Europe.
The event, which is defined as “a place to coexist and exchange in front of the ocean”
The Biarritz Amérique Latine Festival is exclusively dedicated to Latin American cinema and for 27 years has brought together spectators from all corners of Europe who come to discover the cinema and culture of Latin America. In 2019, it was attended by more than 35,000 spectators.
The selection of films includes nearly 80 titles and shows the diversity of the film production of each year in Latin America: diversity in terms of countries
represented, genres and styles.
The editorial line is influenced by a double vocation:
To support Latin American filmmakers and discover Latin American cinema to
the largest possible audience.
With this in mind, since 2014 the Biarritz Festival has partnered with the Lizières project to host young directors in an artistic residency.
There are three competitions at the festival: feature film, short film and
documentary. In addition, each year there is a focus on the film production of a
4 country. In the last editions, tribute has been dedicated to Brazil, Colombia, Chile and Mexico. There are also an out-of-competition section with previews and films on the same theme, as well as ‘ARTE Window’, a selection of documentaries and fictions produced by the Franco-German television channel.
The works presented in the three competitions are chosen by three selection
committees whose members have strong links to the cinema and the Latin
American continent, as well as being experts in them. The members of our comembers constantly travel to Latin America, or live there, so many of the works are identified by our team.
The festival also proposes to discover Latin American culture under other forms, with literary and university meetings in association with the IHEAL (Institute of Higher Studies on Latin America), photography exhibitions and concerts.
The festival’s famous Village, open from 9am to 2am, is a place for meetings and exchanges located by the ocean, where you can see the exhibitions, attend the conferences and enjoy the free concerts every night.
The Biarritz Festival Amérique Latine is a reference event for Latin American
cinema, and without doubt a festival for all the senses…
